After considering it for a number of months, we finally got in touch with six time Hugo loser (a number soon to be increased) Christopher J. Garcia to put together the article we’ve been intent on blackmailing him for– a story of costuming taken past roleplaying and into the world of professional wrestling. Yes, we speak of the artform known as Kaiju Big Battel, where adults dress up as giant monsters a la Godzilla films and beat the tar out of each other in a ring filled with a miniature city.
Then it’s Ms. Sheriff’s turn to share the evil with her tale of the disastrous experience that is making a deadline with a faulty Macintosh.
Finally, for the first time in… cohesively… a year? Robert Hole does his research and tells us all what’s wrong with research and how it affects our notions of historic costuming.

YIPE! Volume 2, Issue 8, “Loose Threads,” is now available for download:

Longtime friend of Yipe! and first time writer Chris O’Halloran starts us off with some musings on the many regrets of masquerade stage crews. Then we look back to the last transmission from Anti-Kevin, translate it into English, and completely fail to orient the lettering to the dimensions of our… dimension.

España retorts against herself by judging a masquerade for the first time, then I clog up the page count with messages scrawled when I lost my voice at BayCon in “Diary of a Mute Fan.”

Finally, Kevin steps out of the Wayback Machine with old partner in crime Jennifer Tifft in tow because Mette’s too busy trotting around the globe to be bothered with 10 Questions for a Costumer.

Our first BayCon tale comes from our good friend Leo Schwab, who writes of his out of costume life as a man everyone accuses of being in costume. The awkwardness is reinforced by Joanne Pelaschier’s take on her first ever outing to the San Francisco Bay Area’s… um… BayConiest… convention?

Then, right on schedule, España gives the Masquerade system an atomic wedgie and steals its lunch money. Longtime reader and first-time contributor Deborah Bretschneider follows with the tale of “Eat the Guests”, BayCon’s first attempt at a zombiewalk… or zombie sit, as the case may be.
And, because we’re all a bunch of selfish bastards who can’t stop talking about ourselves for one instant, Mette puts us back on track with 10 questions for Cosplay goddess and BayCon regular Karisu.

We sat down at some conventions with some of our favorite costumers, got good and loaded, and were dumb enough to record the exchanges for your perusal.

First, Radar gets together with beloved masquerader Cordelia Willis to analyze the process of large group performances from concept to execution. Then Kevin assembles a review of some of his favorite humorous costumes, culminating in the ultimate hall costume/religious event: The Great Washed.

As per usual, España tears us all a new one because we can’t stop making great costumes based on terrible books and movies. I enter the fray with an interview of Rockabilly fiend and ne’er-do-well Sylvia Muñoz, and Mette Hedin returns with another episode of 10 Questions for a Costumer, this time putting Galifrey One and Comicon skit master Bob Mitsch in the hot seat.

YIPE! Volume 2, Issue 5, “Hem and Haw,” is now available for download:

We present to you, in full color, a tale of how a solitary Doctor Who fan broke nearly thirty years of quietly loving the franchise and embraced a Doctor Who convention in full costume. It’s the issue where you’ll learn how a masquerade judge operates, and how you can make the most of your masquerade. You’ll see one of our own coming to grips with the fact she’s now, officially and inescapably, a costumer—or so her luggage tells her. Oh, and Mette wrote a madlib, too.
